The Hanging of Qader Mollah and Pakistan

These are surely the worst of times although these are supposed to be the best of times with the hanging of Qader Mollah. Instead of mass upsurge of celebrations, the hanging has pushed the country into a newer and higher level of conflict with Jamat-Shibir acts of violence all over the country. The rejoicing over the hanging has been muted because the vast majority of the people who wanted Qader Mollah and his cohorts tried and given the severest punishment under the law, feared the costs of the hanging in the country current tryst with a near civil war like situation would be too much. Revisiting the Two-Nation Theory

Mohammad Ali Jinnah is for a very good reason, a controversial political leader in Bangladesh. On his ill-fated visit in 1948 to Dhaka, Mohammad Ali Jinnah had said in Dhaka University Curzon Hall Urdu and Urdu alone will be the national language of Pakistan. That insensitive statement, in retrospect, started the process of ending Pakistan that the British created by dividing India into two independent states of Pakistan and India based on religion or the Two-Nation theory. Jinnah statement gave birth to the Language Movement that eventually broke Pakistan and created the independent state of Bangladesh in 1971. Details

Bangladesh at a Cross Road

The January 5th elections for the 10th parliamentary elections have placed Bangladesh at a crossroad by becoming controversial on a number of major issues. The paper examines these reasons. The examination of these reasons leads to the conclusion that although the elections were held according to the constitution and therefore could be interpreted as being both legal and constitutional (that has given the parliament and the government legality) but because of the way the elections were held and a number of other related factors, these elections have palpably failed to give to both the, extremely important element of legitimacy., There is therefore an urgent need for all the stakeholders led by the government to restore legitimacy to the parliament and the government for the sake of the country and its people.
